Position: Legal Assistant
Department: Law and Criminal Justice
Reports to: Paralegal Manager

Job Summary:
The Legal Assistant will provide comprehensive administrative and secretarial support to our legal team in the Law and Criminal Justice department. The incumbent will be responsible for managing all administrative tasks and ensuring the smooth operation of legal proceedings, while maintaining strict confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards. This role requires exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Assist attorneys and paralegals with legal research, document preparation, and case management.
2. Organize and maintain legal files, case documents, and correspondence in both physical and electronic formats.
3. Draft, proofread, and edit legal documents, including contracts, briefs, pleadings, and memos.
4. Coordinate and schedule meetings, appointments, and court appearances for attorneys.
5. Prepare and distribute legal correspondence, memos, and other communications.
6. Conduct factual and legal research using various resources to support case preparation and analysis.
7. Collaborate with attorneys and paralegals to prepare and submit legal filings and documents to courts and regulatory agencies.
8. Communicate with clients, witnesses, and other parties involved in legal proceedings to gather information and facilitate case progress.
9. Assist in trial preparation, including organizing exhibits, witness lists, and trial binders.
10. Maintain confidentiality of client information and adhere to ethical standards and legal procedures.
11. Stay up to date with changes in laws and regulations relevant to the department and provide summaries and updates to the legal team.
12. Perform general administrative duties such as answering phone calls, managing calendars, and handling incoming/outgoing mail.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Law, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
2. Proven experience as a legal assistant or paralegal in a law firm or legal department.
3. Strong knowledge of legal terminology, procedures, and principles.
4. Proficient in using legal research databases and online resources.
5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to draft clear and concise legal documents.
